Weekend challenge: Fridge/freezer

Actually it'll be pretty painless I think. I already dealt with the one scary thing, a glass of butterscotch pudding that's been in there for six months, and the scotch must have preserved it or something b/c it just slid into the sink and there was no mold or anything and the glass actually looked perfectly clean (don't worry, I washed it thoroughly anyway).

Oh, that's good, my fridge could do with a thorough cleaning. Nothing scary-looking in there, thank goodness, but it's been a while since I really cleaned it, so count me in :)

Preventive measures

I wound up keeping a roll of masking tape and a pen in the kitchen. I use them to label every home-packaged thing that goes into the fridge or freezer. It helps me keep track of what's in there and avoids the problem of "What is that grayish lump under all the ice crystals?".

We also do this for things that go in the freezer. Is very helpful.

There is a small package of natto in the back of my fridge that has been there for some months. I have no idea if it's still good. Probably not, but how do you tell? Either way, I suppose I should deal with it.

I've got TWO fridge freezers, which is a decadent, ridiculous luxury, and I've been trying to get down to just one for YEARS. I'm about there, i think, so this weekend's going to be about getting one of them empty, clean and off :).

I can't do it this weekend, but I should have it done after next weekend! I have things in the freezer that are perfectly good, but that I won't eat. I can palm those off on my brother when he visits next weekend.

Also, there are two big bowls of scary stuff in the fridge, but since trash doesn't go out until mid-week, the only way to keep the contents from smelling the place up would be to... put them in the freezer, which is still full of the things I'm going to palm off on my brother.

It's like a Catch-22! :-D

But I can do some general cleaning of the fridge starting any time, so I accept that part of the challenge for this weekend. *crosses heart and hopes to die with a clean fridge*

ETA:
I 'borrowed' a friend's dumpster so that I could get rid of the scary ex-food and got the fridge cleaned! \o/

Just food left in the freezer to give away or throw away, and some stuff on top of the fridge to toss or find a new home for. Hopefully after this upcoming weekend it'll be completely done. :-)
